Interesting info about this watch: Both today and historically, watchmaking has been closely associated with one specific country: Switzerland. And while the Swiss undoubtedly lead the world in overall watchmaking prowess, other countries today, such as Japan and Germany, are also known to make gorgeous, superior quality timepieces. During much of the twentieth century, however, Japanese watches were seen as low-end, while only German pieces from the early and late 20th century were considered high quality. Other countries, instead, competed with the Swiss. Arguably leading the pack of non-Swiss watchmakers were their American counterparts, who made exceptionally fine contributions to horology for much of the 20th century. Unfortunately, many of the high-end American brands from this era no longer exist. Of those that still do, however, one brand stands out as preeminent: Hamilton. Hamilton made (and still makes) highly recognizable American timepieces, both mechanical and electric. While some of their designs have become veritable classics, Hamilton’s lesser known pieces are often where they shined the brightest. This particular watch is exactly the sort of midcentury mechanical timepiece that Hamilton made best. With a small but sturdy yellow gold case, central seconds, long sculpted lugs, and an American-style dial with both Arabic numerals and matching gold ‘dot’ hour markers, this Hamilton Secometer C was only produced from 1948 through 1951 as the final iteration of their Secometer series.
