Interesting info about this watch: Among the group of illustrious 20th century American watchmakers, Gruen stood apart from its competitors in several ways. Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, the company was among the largest of the high-grade American watchmakers as well as one of the most visible. A Gruen 510 is said to be the first watch worn on screen by James Bond in the classic 1962 film Dr. No, who subsequently sported Gruen timepieces in at least four other classic Bond movies. Although widely known and admired for their classic ‘Curvex’ model, a decidedly American watch in style, Gruen also made watches inspired by European classics. In this case, Gruen drew inspiration from a variant of IWC’s beloved series of caliber 89 timepieces. But this Gruen is no mere IWC copy, and like the Curvex, this particular timepiece has American design cues all over the place — the sharp triangular lugs, the deco-style numerals, the undersized crown, the delightfully simple small seconds subdial, and on. Although no longer the household name it once was prior to closing its doors in the 1950s, Gruen was a watchmaker of vital significance to the horological world and a true stand-out among the many fine American brands of that era.
